Modern Elopement Inspiration at San Francisco City Hall | Part I

Anytime I get a chance to work with The Ganeys my answer is always yes! So this past summer when we were down in the Bay Area for a wedding in Napa, we jumped at the opportunity to create bouquets (yes multiple, keep reading) for an editorial at San Francisco City Hall with the sweetest couple!

This shoot was all about The Tale of Two Bouquets, as I’m calling it. We initially envisioned it as a sleek, modern concept featuring a black and white bouquet, to complement Vanessa’s fun Rime Arodaky caped jumpsuit and Travis’ black suit. I created that bouquet first and loved it. It felt organic and effortless, but still polished enough to feel at home at City Hall. Using ingredients such as garden roses, orlaya, anemones, hellebores, black calla lilies, white tweedia, scabiosa, and my new favorite thing ever: silene! Silene is the small “bladder” flower with the tiny little white lip, on the left side of the bouquet. It is textural and dainty and just…cute! I also used a variety of variegated and textural foliage including geranium, thyme, and grasses. After I tied the bouquet and it was sitting on the table, surrounded by buckets of brightly colored flowers for the weekend’s wedding, I still loved it, but somehow it felt incomplete. So in the last ten minutes before we had to leave, I made a second bouquet, using only flowers, and all brightly colored flowers at that.

That’s why I call this The Tale of Two Bouquets. We styled and photographed Vanessa and Travis with both the black and white bouquet and the no foliage colorful bouquet. What is remarkable about this was not the individual bouquets, although I do love the both, but how the simple change of one element, here the bouquet, can shift the entire mood and feel of the day.

Part I of the Tale of Two Bouquets, tells the story of a modern couple with contemporary sensibilities, eloping in a black and white color palette. The day feels fresh but still classic, warm but not overly romantic. Part II, with a dramatic mood shift, coming soon!

This editorial came together so quickly thanks to an outstanding team!
